The boarding unit is attached to Charlton School and is a homely purpose built unit to accommodate up to 8 special needs young people aged 11-19. It operates Monday to Friday during term time only. Accommodation consist of 4x 2 bedded rooms all with ensuite facilities, height adjustable beds, overhead hoists, a television and dvd/cd player. Some of the rooms have sensory equipment and environmental control. 
We offer a wide range of after school activities and strong links with the local community such as Charlton Athletic football ground. We also work closely with school and professionals to promote the best possible care and make full use of school resources like the gym, ICT suite, specialist equipment, sensory room, hydrotherapy, councellors and specialist staff and programmes like MOVE.
Ethos - The boarding unit has a positive ethos that is based on the empowerment and enabling of the young people who use the service. All individuals are valued members of the team that make up the unit community and each contributes to the enhancement of the caring, happy, relaxed, stimulating and vibrant atmosphere that is enjoyed by staff and young people together.
Statement of Aims - 
To provide a caring and homely atmosphere that creates a safe, secure and stimulating environment for both young people and the staff through listening to the young people and regular training in positive handling, child protection, fire safety, daily health and safety checks and following the school's policies and procedures. Each student has a risk assessment in place and regular fire practices are carried out.
To encourage and help our young people to reach their maximum potential in all areas of development, decision making, independence, personal care and life skills through consistency, listening, praise, liaising with school staff, offering a wide range of activities / trips / experiences, unit staff meetings - threading the Every Child Matters Agenda throughout.
To encourage appropriate behavior, language and dress through providing a consistent approach, setting a good example and praise. To keep sanctions to a minimum but if necessary a form will be filled in and put in their care plan.
To initiate and assist in the development of language, numeracy, social skills and independence through their own individual communication system. School speech therapists liase and support boarding unit staff in this area. 
To provide a continum of care for each young person through compiling care plans and liaising with school, medical staff, parents/carers, health professionals and social workers (LAC reviews).
To liase with parents/carers through sending home daily diary each week, contact by letter or telephone and inviting them to social events such as discos.
To communicate with school staff by hand over verbally and written moring and night, attand the annual reviews and by reading and integrating (where possible) the personal learning plans.
To deal with any compliant / criticism through looking into it and dealing with promptly. We will listen to and invite any comments, questions or suggestions.
